We woke in the morning to the sound of rain pattering against the canvas of our tent. Reluctantly packing up, we had no idea how heavy the rain was until we emerged from the canopy of our forest wild camp.
There was torrential rain falling and streams of water running down the rail trail towards the town of Båstad, an appropriate town name for the curses we had pent up inside of us as we pedalled downhill into the pouring rain.

It took twenty minutes of careful descending through the deluge until we reached the small town of Båstad where we finally found some shelter to wait out the worst of the downpour.
Twenty-five minutes of pondering later, wondering if Scandinavia was such a good place to go for a summer holiday, the downpour finally relented, and we could make our escape out of Båstad.

The weather remained overcast, but the temperature was pleasant and we enjoyed pedalling through dripping wet forests and along the coast all the way to the town of Halmstad, our final destination for the day.

After two full days on the bike, we decided to finish early for the day in Halmstad and let the legs recover. We made the most of the afternoon and evening, strolling around the quiet, sunny streets of Halmstad, a typically charming Scandinavian city with lovely architecture and pedestrian streets.
We found a nice little restaurant with outdoor seating and rewarded ourselves with some cold local beer and pizzas. We had the next day off to let our bodies recover. Mine from my first attempt at cycle touring since arriving home from my 3-year world tour, and Elana’s from her first ever attempt at cycle touring. We enjoyed our beer all the more knowing we had this relaxing day off to look forward to.
